Daffodil poem even! See my blog ;)

Daffodils!!!

She wore her yellow sun-bonnet,
She wore her greenest gown;
She turned to the south wind
And curtsied up and down.
She turned to the sunlight
And shook her yellow head,
And whispered to her neightbour:
"Winter is dead."

Floral Competition Class

Last night I attended the FAR (Floral Association of the Rockies) Floral Competition Class. It was a very enlightening class. Our teacher, Cindy, explained how, why and where to compete. She explained the criteria for judging and which are the most important to the judges. Then, we got to practice!

Each florist was given the same materials, the same assignment and the same amount of time. Get on your mark...go! This is what I made. Actually, this is better than what I made. After we made our floral creations we were judged. Cindy was kind enough to give me some personal recommendations. This arrangement is after her suggested adjustments. I didn't change everything she suggested because I wanted to post what I made...but I couldn't resist tweaking it a bit :)

I got an average score. I'm not terribly disappointed. Actually, for my first time at a timed 'surprise box' competition, I was really very happy. And, I actually like what I made.

Now I think I will deconstruct it and make something else. What else could I have made with these materials? Maybe I'll blog that next!

Pretty much finished!

Now doesn't this look like a real floral design studio?!

I am sooo thrilled. I was going to take more photos but my camera was out of power. That is probably a good thing for you. However you can't see the shelving which is behind me, or the nice mats on the floor or the storage under the table. Oh well. Just use your imagination :)

It is so wonderful to have dedicated space. All that is left is to adjust the height of the table and move the rest of my stuff to their new home.

Thanks to my family who has been helping me and listening to my giddy chatter and watching the progress.

Thanks to all who follow my blog.

Tonight I have a class on designing for competition. I have no plans to compete any time soon, but this is just another opportunity to learn...and to play with flowers. I hope to bring home something interesting and post a photo!

First Flowers in my New Studio

At last! My studio is complete enough to work in! It's not totally done, but enough so that I can spread out, crank up the jazz (thank you Abby) and get to work. I can't tell you how very spoiled I feel :)

This is two different sides of the same arrangement. If you look closely at the second photo, you can find a little nest tucked in amongst the grasses, moss and curly willow.

The flowers at the shop were so fresh and beautiful I had a very difficult time not buying them all. The hyacinth smells so wonderful too! But, this is part of being a florist--staying on a budget.

I hope the woman who receives these flowers is blessed by their beauty and by the thoughtfulness of the loved ones giving them to her.
This is the package of flowers from the florist. Just thought you might like to see the beginning and end results.

Design Space Part 2

Well, the guys did a lot of moving things last night for me. Thank you my heros!

So, now I have a special place for my work apron.

The beginning of storage/work space. Cubbies that used to hold the kids' craft supplies. The hardest thing to clean off was glitter glue :)

Here is a table made out of a door that we have had for years.

And, a little 4 drawer cabinet. Fixed that top drawer so it is all in working order now.

Design table!!!!
Lots of space, elbow room and no kitchen appliances to spill/spray stuff on!

It will be so nice to have my kitchen available in the midst of a wedding!!!

Work mats on the cement floor. This will make a huge difference when we are working down there for hours at a time.

The Making of My Studio!

Well, I am finally making my floral studio! Yes, you heard right. I will be moving my floral supplies out of the garage and spare room and hallway and kitchen--into a studio in the basement.
I invite you to join me in the process.
Notice my fine welcome sign! You may recognise this as the white board on which we always keep score of the Foosball games. It's okay. I'll let you borrow it for the next Foosball tourney!

We found a great way to store all of the ribbon. Abby and I spent time roaming around Home Depot and we came up with this. Do you know that Home Depot does not make shelving specific for ribbon storage!

This is my wonderful photo area. My fans (better know as my children) bought me this wonderful set up to take professional looking photos of my work. I love it! Now it is ready whenever I am.
And yes, that is my son's parkour vault box that it is sitting on. But he helped me set it up and gave me permission to use it. I'll let him have it back whenever he needs it :)

And, of course energy food!
Finally, the first two boxes of rubbish! You know there will be more--and it won't be as celebrated. Right now though, it feels like an accomplishment.
Thanks for joining me on the first day of making my studio. Stay tuned and you will see it "come to life."
In case you can't tell....I'm very excited :)

Better than three?

Let's try six!!!

How about 6 Crazy Daisy arrangements!
Actually we have 10, but they are now all packaged up to attend the Colorado Family Life Center Dessert and Share evening!

Flower Therapy

Christmas is over.
New Year's Eve is past.
The decorations are coming down.
Back to the daily routine.
Time for some 'flower therapy.'
Better yet, time for some Pink Flower Therapy!

Tulips and roses and alstromeria--it's almost spring!

To top it off, for Christmas my kids got me a portable photos studio to help with my photography. Maybe they have read my blog and seen all the complaining that I do about my lack of abilities!

So, today you witness the results of using my new portable studio! I am thrilled with the results. I hope that you enjoy too.

And, if the bitter cold, cloudy days, post-holiday blues are dampening your spirits, try some flower therapy :) Guaranteed to brighten your day!
